Alexandrite Lab Grown Gemstones

Alex.jpg (11911 bytes)

Alexandrites are amazing gemstones for jewelry, because faceted gems undergo a dramatic color change in different types of light.  An example of this property is shown at the left. In warm indoor incandescent or candle lighting, this gem is a rich purplish red color.  In bright daylight, it is greenish blue.  To see the extremes of the color change one would need to be in environments in which these light sources are pure, but nonetheless, significant color difference can easily be observed in various lighting. Our lab grown or created man-made alexandrite, like natural alexandrite,  is a member of the chrysoberyl family which has the chemical composition beryllium aluminum oxide (BeAl2O4).   Be cautious when buying lab alexandrite, because many dealers indiscriminately use the term for imitations (such as color-change corundum).  Chrysoberyl occurs in a range of colors including green, yellow, and brown, and often exhibits a cat's eye chatoyancy.  The name alexandrite is reserved for the very rare and valuable color-change variety of chrysoberyl . The best natural chrysoberyl, including alexandrite, has been found in the Ural mountains of Russia.  In fact, the color-change variety is named after Prince Alexander of Russia because it was discovered in 1830 on the day of his coming of age.  Natural alexandrite is so rare that few people have ever seen one, and its value is on a par with emeralds, rubies, and sapphires. Our lab-grown crystals have higher perfection than is usually seen in natural stones.  We are able to offer them at a small fraction of the cost of comparable natural stones.   We categorize the degree of color change in five subjective ranges: excellent, very good, good, fair, and minimal.  The price per carat varies accordingly.  Stones with little color change tend toward a pleasant   wine-red color.  We can set these gemstones for you in silver or  gold jewelry mountings.  Ask for details.  You can click on any underlined Item # to see a photo of the gem.  Use your browser's "back" button to return to the list.  Please be aware that it is difficult to capture the true colors of alexandrite in our photographs because they depend so much on the type of lighting.
